The Grace of Crisis/Gift of Desperation |  by Ron Moore

Deuteronomy 30:17-18 (English Standard Version)

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

The world is full of distractions. At every turn, there is yet another invitation to buy something that is bigger, better, and faster. From billboards to blogs, we are promised something will change our lives.

In a world full of distractions, we can…well, get distracted. Our minds and hearts can be lulled away from what is most important. Distractions become the main attraction. The warning God placed before Israel in today’s passage is the same warning he puts before us.

God does not put up with competition. The reason? He is God. Nothing else or no one else compares. When we settle for anything other than him, we are not settling for second best. We are settling for nothing at all. Apart from him we “will not live long in the land” of blessing.

Father, please open our eyes to see through the things that distract. Help us to keep our focus zeroed on you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
